Old Hickory Lake
During the last part of the tournament this season I caught a lot of fish consistently, without any really huge whoppers. At Old Hickory Lake in Tennessee, my most successful technique was flipping a jig shallow and a drop shot deep.
Speaking of flipping a jig — there was one point where I was flipping in very tight cover, but managed to get a bite and set the hook. However, I set it so hard that the fish came flying up out of the water and got hung up in some dense trees! I just hit the trolling motor and crashed on through the trees after him. The bass was kicking his tail and I made it just in time and my co angler was able to net the fish, but let me tell you, my adrenaline was pumping overtime!
I took 15th place at Old Hickory, it was very exciting! It was raining pretty hard on day three and I was wearing my Wiley X Blink Climate Control polarized glasses, which made it possible for me to drive my boat at a comfortable speed, despite Mother Nature’s interference. Plus, I used them at every event in the morning—and it was foggy at each one. When the wind finally died down, I’d just remove the Facial Cavity Seal™ inside – these glasses are so cool — they make a really big difference for me — and I wear them on and off the water.
Neely Henry, Alabama
My most productive technique here was swimming and flipping a jig, and again didn’t catch anything outstanding in weight—they were all pretty close in size.
One cool thing that happened at this tournament was that my 12-year-old son Taylor got to come and go out with me before official practice. While we were out I was swimming a jig with a single tail grub and he didn’t want to use it. I told him to just give it a try, and his first cast he caught the biggest fish of the day! After that, he decided that was his new favorite bait.
This was hands down my favorite tournament of the season — it was a challenge each day because of the weather conditions, temperature changes an water leaves all playing a big role in making things interesting. However, I had a good practice and I learned so much at this event that I will be able to use in future competitions.
While there was thick fog on days tow and three during takeoff, I was wearing my Wiley X Blinks once again, so it was possible for me to drive the boat like I needed to. Plus, the design prevents me from getting dry eyes from the wind, so my vision AND my energy levels were both at their peaks. I plan to fish the Women’s Bass Master tour next season as well as some circuits in Arizona — and can’t wait to see what next season will bring!
BIO
Beauty, brains and bassin’ skills galore — Tanya is a triple threat that has taken the industry by storm since she started in her first tournament in 1999, where she caught her very first 2.5 pounder. This fitness enthusiast turned
“Bass N’ Babe” sensation has since been turning heads and handling strikes from monster hawgs on the Women's Bass Master Tour, All Star Teams,
Jack AZ, AZ Bass Fishing, and the American Bass Association. Today, she’s one of the top female bass anglers in the country, with numerous top finishes and championship qualifiers.
Not just another pretty face on the Wiley X Pro Bass Team, Tanya brings it every time she hits the lake.
She has her “go to” baits, but they change, as she believes that the more baits in her arsenal, the better.
“Jig, top water, drop shot, whatever the fish like that day, that’s my favorite!” says Tanya.
What does she find most rewarding as a pro angler? “I love to be able to inspire other people. I hear all the time ‘Gosh, if she can do it, maybe I can, too!’ from men, women and children all over the world,” says Tanya. “My fan base is a pretty wide demographic!”
Tanya used to be challenged, like many fishing enthusiasts, by headaches from all the time on the water. Not so since she started using Wiley X’s products. “I always have Wiley X on, and it’s been an incredible improvement!
I feel so much better coming in off the lake, my eyes aren’t sore and they don’t tear up driving across the lake,” says Tanya. “And Wiley X’s Climate Control Blinks are perfect — the removable gasket protect my eyes perfectly, and the lenses give me a real edge when bed fishing — I love them!”
Tanya’s careers have included modeling and acting, and her non-angling hobbies include family time, fitness, hunting, and archery. Here’s a tip: Better grab some Wiley X glasses of your own when she turns that 1,000 watt signature grin on!
