Casting Freedom

In 2004, Rebecca Campbell and Ron Potter launched Casting Freedom, a non-profit providing financial assistance and scholarship for Gold Star families and combat-wounded veterans. Rebecca is a Gold Star mother, whose son was 82^nd airborne and passed away during combat. Ron is a retired Marine, who saw first-hand the struggles veterans go through post-combat. Both his platoon commander and sergeant fell during battle and the records showing him being awarded the Purple Heart were lost.

Ron found himself without medical records and status, and many non-profits were unable to help him. The nonprofit, Children of the Fallen Soldiers helped him obtain his Purple Heart and update his medical records. He realized through this process he wanted to give back as well. Each month, Casting Freedom helps a wounded veteran or a Gold Star family member connect with nature by providing all the equipment they could need to get out on the water and fish. “We wanted it to be more than a fishing trip,” Ron says. “We wanted them to be able to continue the sport.” The recipients are gifted rod/reel combos, Strike King terminal tackle, line, Wiley X sunglasses, additional apparel and just about anything else they would need for countless days of fishing fun.

We are creating a family connection in a community of veterans who can not only help themselves, but each other as well,” he says. “We are stronger together and want the world to know the veteran community isn’t dysfunctional or damaged. We have obstacles like any other person in the world does and we need to have the tools to overcome them.” Casting Freedom strives to create a new community and battle combat veteran suicide.

Casting Freedom is a group of volunteers consisting of Marine Corps Purple Heart recipients, active duty, veterans, first responders, and Gold Star family members.

Children of Fallen Soldiers Relief Fund started in 2004 and provides college grant programs, financial assistance, adopt a family, and now Casting Freedom. We support veterans, wounded veterans, and Gold Star families.

We are a non-partisan organization. Politics aside, whether you are a Republican, Democrat or Independent; whether you were for or against these wars, our organization wishes to provide emotional and financial support to these deserving families. We believe that you do not have to take “sides” to help in this worthy cause.
