Dustin Ellermann is a busy man. He runs summer and marksmanship camps, hunts hogs from helicopters, writes for gun magazines, and creates hundreds of videos for his popular YouTube channel. Throughout the years, Dustin and his wife have fostered a total of 10 children. He currently has four at home, two of which he adopted through the foster care program. His love and compassion for others began by following his parent’s example. They’ve never taken a salary at their children’s Christian summer camp, Camp His Way.
Dustin won the third season of the competitive shooting competition, Top Shot, in 2011. The recognition he received from the show brought attention to Camp His Way, which already had a long wait list. He decided to create a marksmanship camp on a separate campus during the spring and fall. The experience is a step outside of shooting at a paper from 25 feet away and focuses on marksmanship and safety. There are team competitions, relays and reactive targets. The marksmanship camp provides education on paintball guns, archery, the tomahawk and slingshots as well. Originally intended for children, the camp became so popular they started letting parents in.
As an active participant in land and wildlife preservation, Dustin hunts wild hogs from helicopters to help maintain a balance of wild hogs and the environment. “Hogs are very destructive,” he says. “They tear up the land and cause millions of dollars in crop damages and land destruction. Hogs also reproduce rapidly, threatening other wildlife like white tail deer. Texas is one of several states that allow this method of hunting.” He records these experiences and shares them with his followers on his YouTube channel, Top Shot Dustin.
